Your deadline, and what we do
Your deadline
- An Answer to an application is usually due within 30 days of being served, or 60 days if you were served outside Canada or the United States.
- A response to a motion is due a few days before the hearing date shown on the notice of motion, so the time is short.
- If you do not respond in time, the case can go ahead without you.
Have the date you were served, and any hearing date, ready when you call.
What we do
- Review the papers you were served with.
- Explain your options and the likely next steps in plain terms.
- Prepare and file your response: an Answer, or a responding affidavit for a motion.
- Appear for you at the case conference or motion.

We check for conflicts
Before anyone discusses your case, we confirm we have never acted for the other party.
Paid papers review
Once the check is clear, we book a review with the lawyer and send a secure link for your court papers.
Fixed fee in writing
If you want us to act, we quote a fixed fee for the next step, in writing, before work starts.

A child or your safety at risk
If anyone is in danger now, call 911.
Call us now if:
- A child may be taken out of Ontario.
- A child has not been returned after a visit.
- Someone has threatened to harm you or your children.
- Your home is not safe for you or your children.

We assess whether your situation qualifies as urgent. Courts hear urgent motions, including motions without notice to the other party, only in limited situations, and we will tell you plainly whether yours is one.

What if I miss the deadline?
Call as soon as possible. Without a response, the case can go ahead and orders can be made without hearing your side. Your options narrow the longer you wait.
Do I have to go to court?
You have to respond to the papers either way. Most cases start with a case conference, where a judge helps both sides narrow the issues, and many settle without a trial. Ignoring the papers does not stop the case.
Can I respond myself and get help with part of it?
Yes. We can review your papers, draft your Answer or affidavit, or appear for one step while you handle the rest. What we do and what you handle is confirmed in writing first.
What does the papers review cost?
The papers review is a paid 45-minute meeting with the lawyer, booked after the conflict check. The fee, HST and cancellation terms are shown when you book.
